India overtakes U.S. with highest number of active Facebook users in the world
San Diego Sun - Sunday 16th July, 2017
India currently has 241 million active Facebook users, while the U.S. has 240 million
Facebook contradicted the report by TheNextWeb and said India has 201 million active users
Facebook announced it has more than two billion monthly users around the world
NEW DELHI, India - Beating the United States, India has reportedly managed to become the country with the most number of active Facebook users in the world.
According to a report by TheNextWeb, as of July 13, there were 241 million users in India, while the U.S. has 240 million.
The report added that the change at the top of the platform's country rankings comes just a few days after Facebook announced it has more than two billion monthly users around the world.
Since the start of 2017, Facebook has achieved impressive growth in both the countries.
The Next Web reported that these new figures suggest that active users in India are growing more than twice as fast as they are in the U.S.
In the past six months alone, the number of active users in India was up 27 percent (50 million), compared to a growth of 12 percent (26 million) in the U.S. over the same period.
However, Facebook has contradicted the numbers and said that India stands at 201 million.
A Facebook spokesperson said in a statement, “India has 201 million active users and retains the second place after the U.S.”
Earlier this year, when Facebook announced its earnings for the fourth quarter and full year 2016, it showed a steady growth in its revenue and user base.
Facebook had reported $8.8 billion in revenue, $3.56 billion in profit and said more than 1.23 billion people were using the social network every day and that 1.15 billion log into the platform from mobile devices each day.
Experts pointed out that even though India is the largest audience base for Facebook, the social media penetration is quite low.
In June, only 19 percent of the total users remained active on the social site. The figures have reportedly also exposed the gender imbalance over the usage of social networks.
While men represent three-quarters of the active accounts in India, in the U.S., 54 percent users are women.
