Because police misconduct creates a number of problems, it is important for anyone affected to report the incident and retain legal representation as soon as possible.
An NYPD officer who had a history of violence was arrested for selling multiple types of narcotics in White Plains.
Officer sells drugs years after getting in trouble for beating a suspect
The 38 year old male cop was arrested and indicted along with several other suspects. The White Plains court filed documentation saying that the defendant and a few other men had been selling methamphetamine and GBL, which is sometimes called the date rape drug. Local investigators recorded the men selling several hundred grams of these controlled substances between 2017 and 2020 in New York City and around Westchester County.
He was initially taken into state custody, but will be transported to federal prison to await the trial day. All of the men involved are scheduled to appear before a White Plains judge in the federal courthouse.
The current drug charges could carry a sentence of life in prison if he is convicted. An assistant U.S. Attorney assigned to the case commented that methamphetamine charges carry heavy sentences due to the fact that the drug has devastated many communities around the United States in recent years.
Former complaints against the officer dating back to 2010 detailed his violent history. The Bronx District Attorney had already investigated the officer for punching and kicking a suspect who was detained and in handcuffs. He was suspended briefly at the time, but other details about the incident remain confidential.
Improper behavior by government employees and damage to the public
Police misconduct and violence harms everyone, including taxpayers. When an officer is involved in illicit activity like drug transactions, they will often make false arrests or plant evidence to ensure that someone else takes the fall for their behavior.
People who become victims of these kinds of behaviors should contact a lawyer and file a formal complaint with the department through internal affairs immediately. It may be possible to have the officer investigated and suspended or terminated from their position. An attorney can also file a civil rights lawsuit on the victim's behalf, alleging violations of their constitutional rights and abuse of authority by a government employee. These civil lawsuits are the only way for a victim to receive compensation, even in cases where the officer is charged criminally for illegal activities.
