New York Jets backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and is expected to miss the rest of the preseason.
The procedure, which was termed a 'minor scope' by Jets coach Aaron Glenn on Tuesday, was to correct an issue that had kept Taylor on the sidelines for more than a week.
'I don't think he'll be playing in the preseason,' Glenn said after a joint practice with the New York Giants. 'But, hopefully, he'll be ready for Week 1.'
The Jets open the regular season against the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 7.
Taylor is the No. 2 QB behind Justin Fields. The Jets also have UFL standout Adrian Martinez in the mix, as well as undrafted rookie Brady Cook. Cook limped off the field Tuesday, but Glenn said his injured ankle is not believed to be serious.
Taylor, 36, began his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens and has played for the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, New York Giants and the Jets.
He went 17-for-22 for 119 yards with three touchdowns in two games last season with the Jets.
He has a career 28-28-1 record as a starter, and he was selected to the Pro Bowl after the 2015 season.
In 94 career games, Taylor has thrown for 12,254 yards and 68 touchdowns with 29 interceptions. He has a 61.9 percent completion rate.
