The Los Angeles Angels placed starting pitcher Tyler Anderson on the 15-day injured list and signed free agent pitcher Jose Urena to fill his spot ahead of Sunday's game against the Houston Astros.
Anderson, who is dealing with a left oblique strain, last threw in Friday's 2-0 loss in Houston, working around five hits and three walks to toss five scoreless innings.
While the 35-year-old lefty has a 2-8 record this season and hasn't recorded a win since April 18 vs. San Francisco, he has a 4.56 ERA with 104 strikeouts to 57 walks in 26 starts, spanning 136 1/3 innings.
Anderson was next due to pitch on Wednesday in Kansas City. That spot could be filled by Urena, whom the Angels signed six days after he cleared waivers and elected free agency when the Minnesota Twins designated him for assignment.
Upon his first appearance for Los Angeles, Urena, 33, will have pitched for five teams during the 2025 season, previously making stops with the New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers and Minnesota.
Across those teams, the right-hander has made 13 appearances (five starts) this season with an 0-1 record and a 5.00 ERA over 36 innings, with 20 strikeouts and 13 walks.
Over 11 seasons with 10 different teams, Urena has a 44-78 career record and a 4.77 ERA across 984 1/3 innings.
